Purpose of Position: This position presides over civil stalking protection order and sexually-oriented offense protection order full hearings and ex parte emergency hearings. Hearings are conducted to obtain evidence and resolve disputes. The position requires the application of legal research and the Magistrate’s own knowledge and judgment to formulate recommendations to the Judges concerning the civil stalking docket.
Essential Job Functions:
• Schedules and presides over civil stalking protection order and sexually-oriented offense protection order full hearings and ex parte emergency hearings. • Researches relevant case law to assure that written opinions, and decisions, are based upon current statutes and appropriate case law. • Prepares or assists with continuance entries; determines if modifications to issued orders are necessary; rules upon objections to requests for continuance and extension based on statutory requirements and fairness. • Knowledge of legal research methods and sources; court processes; general legal principles; civil law; civil rules of procedures; civil rules of evidence; local rules of court, and rules governing the courts of Ohio. • Effectively manages a large case docket while maintaining work product of exceptional quality. • Analyzes, synthesizes, and distinguishes legal concepts and materials. • Responds to inquiries from various agencies and/or individuals (e.g. judges, court employees, attorneys, litigants, and general public). • Must be able to quickly judge the credibility of the parties and render a timely decision. • Complies with the continuing legal education requirements for magistrates, as outlined in Rule X of the Ohio Supreme Court Rules for the Government of the Bar of Ohio. • Assists in special assignments from the court. • Performs other related duties as required.

• Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with judges, staff, attorneys, litigants, outside agencies and the public. • Extensive knowledge of applicable and relevant laws and rules of practice and procedure (e.g., Ohio Rules of Civil Procedure, Local Rules of the Court). • Proven organizational, analytical, and legal research skills and attention to detail and accuracy. • Ability to work independently and complete assigned work without daily supervision (e.g., docket management, conduct hearings, formulation of recommendations). • Ability to work effectively and in a professional manner when under stress and confronted with tight deadlines. • Effective time management, reliability, and punctuality. • Ability to maintain sensitive and confidential information. • Ability to organize and prioritize duties. • Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office applications and ability to gain an understanding of the use of all case management software applications utilized by the court. • Professional appearance and demeanor at all times. • Ability to exert light physical effort in sedentary to light work, but which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of light weight (5-10 pounds). Tasks may involve extended periods of time at a keyboard or workstation. • Work involves a significant amount of standing, walking, sitting, stooping, reaching with hands/arms and writing. • Visual ability sufficient to operate equipment.
• Juris Doctor • Six years of law experience as an attorney • Must possess and maintain a license to practice law in the State of Ohio • Ability to operate computer applications
